Notion on Global Mental Health Issues
“No health without mental health” is the proposition from WHO that shows how important mental health is for humans, especially in adolescent development. Mental health is fundamental for our ability to think, feel, interact with one another, and most importantly, enjoy living.
Recently, the online learning process has had a significant impact on adolescents regarding their mental health. Being isolated from the outside world and not having the opportunity to physically interact with their peers during their golden period of life stresses them out, compounded by an increasing academic burden. During a mental health webinar held at the University of Indonesia by a mental health promotion community (@uisehatmental), it is discovered that most students experienced academic burn-out from low to severe. This issue affects their productivity and causes stagnation in their self-development. At this present time, motivation to live a better life appears less and a campaign about mental health awareness is urgently needed.
As quoted from The Lancet article, mental health awareness needs to be integrated globally into all aspects including academic and social policy. For this matter, we have to find ways to spread and educate about the treatment of early indications of mental health breakdown so it doesn’t get worse. We need systematic collaboration from all levels so that the campaign can be carried out optimally and comprehensively.
The notion of the campaign is the introduction to the methods of self-awareness, self-compassion, and academic resilience. Self-awareness means recognizing the positive and negative aspects of oneself. Meanwhile, self-compassion is reflected by being compassionate or kind to ourselves, just as the way we are kind to others. And lastly, academic resilience grown by fostering wellness, fight permanence and nurturing a positive view of ourselves.
